Descriptive Writing – The way to write descriptively

How to write a piece that appeals to the sensory organs of the humans reading it? Descriptive writing is the best form of writing in the way it activates the sensory organs of the reader.

You actually become a part of the story while reading the descriptive piece such as that the whole story is taking place in front of your very own eyes. Image formation while writing about something really helps in catching and keeping hold of the reader’s attention till the very end. The question is what is the secret behind successful descriptive writing?

The first and foremost priority that should be given while writing any descriptive piece of writing is knowing about the audience that you are going to target. The knowledge of likes and dislikes of the audience that you want to attract is very critical in formation of a good description.

Once you know what the audience is expecting out of your writing, it becomes very important to utilize this information to best possible extent in order to catch the attention of the readers.

For example – the young generation would like to read something that is adventurous and talks about the lighter side of the life whereas the old or matured folks would like to look at the realistic aspects of something rather than its looks and superficial details.

It is important that the reader is able to relate the piece of descriptive writing with his/her own life or familiar situation he/she has been part of.

Descriptive writing apart from being beguiling also adds a sense of curiosity and essential minutiae into the piece of writing. It adds colors, sound, light and sense of palpable feeling to the reader. The aim of the writer should be able to maintain balance between all these things and create a writing piece that is neither too dreary, nor too much overcooked.

Today’s readers are not very patient to read the broad description about the minute details yet they try to find out everything possible in the least written description. So, it becomes important to hit it on the mark, and do not deviate too much from the gist of the topic.

Some of the tips that might help you to improve on your descriptive writing skills are as follows:

  • Do not try to use hefty words for describing simplest of the features of something. People are not reading your content to check out your vocabulary skills.
  • Try and come to the point or create a picture of something within the least possible number of words.
  • Don’t use too many adjectives for the description of particular thing or feeling. It will spoil the fun of reading a piece of writing.
  • Use active verbs instead of adverbs as they are more convenient and to the point in describing something.
  • And of course, practice a lot on your skills.

The Final Verdict

Thus from above discussion we can say that a good piece of descriptive writing will be to the point without creating much chaos with the extensive use of vocabulary, and excessive adjectives and adverbs.

Always remember that writing descriptively is something that describes something, and not boasts over the limits about it.
